The Chrysanthemum which is the focal point of this ring is cast from a mold I had made of a piece of hand cut antique coral brought from Japan in the 1950's by my great Aunt Helen Moore.
Helen spent 30 years as a missionary teaching Home Ec in Japan from the mid 1920's until the mid 1950's. During the WWII she was sent to a prison camp in the Philippines where she remained for almost 2 years until the wars's end. After the war she returned to Japan and stayed there until her retirement. She loved the country and it's people very much.
During my childhood Aunt Helen spent many holidays with us. She had wonderful stories, taught me embroidery and doll making and inspired and nurtured the creativity which ended up guiding the rest of my life. She also gave my mother and me exquisite pieces of jewelry, many of which she had acquired during her extensive travels throughout Asia. All of these pieces and their beauty have inspired me over the years.
The original coral Chrysanthemum from which the one in this ring is cast is from a pair of earrings. I always loved the earrings and marveled at the skill with which the coral pieces were carved. I am so pleased to be able to incorporate this heirloom treasure into my own designs.
The solid silver chrysanthemum measures approx 1.7 cm in diameter, the dome is 7mm high (including stone) and it sits atop a 6 mm wide feather pattern cuttlefish cast silver band. The center stone is a 8mm round medium blue lapis cabochon with a bright streak of golden pyrite across it's dome.
This ring weighs approx 12.24 grams. It is US size 6.5. One of a kind.
